Market outlook
Stable Outlook 7/10
The card has already established itself as a desirable staple collectible, but supply is still sufficient enough to prevent extreme short-term spikes unless a broader One Piece wave or grading-driven surge occurs.
Next months. Likely to trade in a relatively stable range with modest movement based on condition, grading results, and overall One Piece market sentiment.
Long term. Over 1-3 years, it has a good chance of gradual appreciation, especially in graded 10 and other top-grade populations, but returns are likely to be strongest for pristine copies rather than raw card inventory.
History
Shanks is one of the most important characters in One Piece, created by Eiichiro Oda. He is the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates and one of the Four Emperors (Yonko), symbolizing the highest tier of pirate power in the series. Shanks is especially significant because he inspired Monkey D. Luffy's journey, famously giving him his straw hat and setting the story in motion. In the One Piece Card Game, Shanks is a highly collectible character because of his status, popularity, and strong visual appeal across alternate art printings.
First released in Japanese in the OP-09 booster set 'Emperors in the New World' (Japanese: '新たなる皇帝'), which launched on August 31, 2024. This specific card is the Super Rare Shanks OP09-004 alt art variant from that set.
- Shanks is one of the flagship chase characters in the OP-09 set due to his Yonko status and fan popularity.
- The alt art Super Rare version is more desirable to collectors than the regular art printing because of its premium illustration and lower effective supply.
- OP-09 was a major anniversary-era release for the One Piece Card Game, which helped lift attention and prices across key character cards like Shanks.

Collector notes
Condition. For this card, closely inspect the front surface for holo scratches, edge whitening, corner softness, print lines, and centering. Alt art foiling can hide light scratches but also makes them easier to notice under angled light. Japanese cards can also show minor factory edge wear or surface roller marks. If graded, eye appeal and centering matter heavily for premium value.
Storage. Store in a perfect-fit sleeve inside a top loader or semi-rigid holder, and keep it in a cool, dry, low-UV environment. For high-value copies, use an acid-free sleeve and avoid repeated handling. If sending for grading, keep the card flat and protected from pressure to prevent corner dents and surface scuffs.
Authenticity. Authentic One Piece cards should have crisp Japanese text, correct set numbering OP09-004, and proper print texture/foil behavior. Check for inconsistent font weight, dull or muddy colors, incorrect back coloration, or poor cut quality that may indicate a counterfeit. Compare the holo pattern and card stock feel against known authentic copies. Because this is a popular card, altered copies and counterfeit slabs are worth watching for, especially in online marketplaces.
