Market outlook
Stable Outlook 7/10
Demand is supported by nostalgia and set-completion collecting, but abundant supply caps aggressive appreciation in raw form. Premiums are most likely to remain strongest for gem-mint graded copies and pristine raw examples.
Next months. Likely to remain stable with modest fluctuations, especially for raw and mid-grade copies.
Long term. Expect gradual appreciation for high-grade copies, while raw copies should stay relatively inexpensive due to abundant supply.
History
Mewtwo is a genetically engineered Pokémon created from Mew’s DNA, first introduced in the original Pokémon games and anime as a powerful Psychic-type legendary/rare species associated with artificial creation, scientific ambition, and ethical conflict. In the TCG, Mewtwo is one of the most iconic Kanto-era chase cards and a frequent reprint target because of its long-standing popularity and strong nostalgic demand.
This Evolutions version was first released in the English XY—Evolutions expansion in 2016, which was widely distributed through booster packs and related product releases in late 2016; Evolutions itself was designed as a nostalgic base-set homage.
- This card is a direct reprint/homage to the original Base Set Mewtwo, updated for the XY era.
- The standard version is a non-holo rare, while alternate print treatments exist in the set ecosystem such as reverse holo and prerelease variants.
- Evolutions Mewtwo remains a high-liquidity nostalgia card; even raw copies are inexpensive, while graded 10 copies command a much higher premium.
Collector notes
Condition. Check centering, edge whitening, corner wear, surface scratches, and print lines. Evolutions cards often show whitening on corners/edges and visible holo or surface blemishes on higher-grade copies; for non-holo copies, look closely for roller marks, scuffs, and back-surface wear.
Storage. Store in a penny sleeve and semi-rigid or top-loader, keep away from heat, humidity, and UV light, and use graded protection if pursuing a high-grade copy. Keep the card flat and avoid repeated handling without gloves or clean hands.
Authenticity. Authentic copies should have crisp XY-era print quality, proper font, and clean set numbering 51/108. Watch for blurry text, incorrect color saturation, poor cut quality, and suspiciously glossy or flat surfaces; compare to known genuine images, especially because Evolutions cards are heavily traded and counterfeited due to demand.
