History
Charizard is the final evolution of Charmander, a Fire/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I of the Pokémon franchise. As the mascot of the original games Pokémon Red and Blue, it symbolizes power and is one of the most iconic Pokémon, frequently featured in media and merchandise.
First released in the Pokémon Base Set Unlimited English edition in January 1999 by Wizards of the Coast in North America.
- Charizard #4/102 is the most sought-after card from the Base Set due to its holographic artwork and status as a flagship Pokémon.
- The card depicts Charizard breathing flames, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, whose art became legendary in the TCG.
- It sparked massive hype upon release, contributing to the Pokémon trading card boom of the late 1990s.
Collector notes
Condition. Inspect centering (especially top/bottom due to black borders), corners for whitening or dings, edges for chipping or dents, and surface for scratches, print lines, or holo foil scratches; common flaws include poor centering, edge wear from shuffling, and holo scratches on flames.
Storage. Store in sleeves like Dragon Shield or Perfect Fit with semi-rigid holders, in top loaders or binders away from sunlight/UV, at stable temperature/humidity (50-60% RH), never stack unsleeved.
Authenticity. Check for correct Wizards of the Coast copyright (1995,1998,1999), precise holo pattern with sharp flame details, accurate font/spacing on text; fakes often have blurry prints, wrong colors, or incorrect back patterns; use blacklight for paper fluorescence or consult graded/graded/graded for grading.
