History
Dark Gyarados is the corrupted, rage-filled evolution of Magikarp, turned evil by Team Rocket's scheme in the Pokémon anime's first episode 'Pokémon - I Choose You!'. It rampages across a lake until subdued by Ash's Pikachu, symbolizing raw power and villainy; in lore, it's a shiny Gyarados with black scales, representing Mega Magikarp's potential unleashed through malice.
First released in Japan on November 21, 1997, as part of the Pokémon Card Game 'Rocket Gang' expansion set.
- Iconic from the anime's premiere episode where it destroys a town
- One of the earliest 'Dark Pokémon' cards featuring Team Rocket's twisted designs

Collector notes
Condition. Check for centering issues common in early Japanese prints, holo scratch patterns on black scales, edge whitening from thin cardstock, surface scratches on foil from playwear; avoid off-centering >60/40.
Storage. Use semi-rigid holders or top-loaders with sleeves in cool, dry environment; avoid direct light to prevent holo oxidation; graded/graded slabs ideal for long-term.
Authenticity. Verify kanji text alignment and font sharpness; genuine holos have crisp 'Dark Gyarados' overlay without pixelation; check graded/graded labels; fakes often have blurry attacks or incorrect back patterns; UV light reveals holo authenticity.
