Market outlook
Rising Outlook 7/10
This card has shown durable demand and periodic upward pressure from collectors chasing iconic alternate arts. Gengar’s fanbase is broad, and the card’s place as the flagship chase of Fusion Strike supports resilience over time. While short-term pricing can fluctuate with broader Pokémon market sentiment, the long-term collector base remains strong.
Next months. Likely to remain volatile but firm, with premium copies holding value and occasional spikes tied to market interest or auction activity.
Long term. Expected to appreciate gradually if modern alternate-art demand remains strong and supply of gem-mint copies stays constrained. Likely to outperform many regular ultra rares, though growth may be uneven and influenced by broader TCG market cycles.
History
Gengar is a classic Pokémon from the original Kanto generation (Pokémon Red/Blue era), introduced as the final evolution of Gastly and Haunter. In the Pokémon franchise, Gengar is a Ghost/Poison-type known for its mischievous, shadowy personality and strong fan appeal. The VMAX form represents its Gigantamax-inspired oversized battle form from the Sword & Shield era, and the alternate-art treatment made it one of the most iconic modern chase cards.
First released in the English-language Sword & Shield: Fusion Strike expansion in 2021. The card is numbered 271/264 and was issued as a Secret Rare Alternate Art chase card in the set.
- One of the most sought-after modern Pokémon TCG chase cards, largely because of Gengar’s popularity and the dramatic alternate-art illustration.
- Although numbered 271/264, it is a secret rare and appears outside the main set numbering, which is typical for ultra-chase cards in modern expansions.
- Market coverage in late 2023 placed it around the $200+ range raw, showing it remained one of the flagship cards of Fusion Strike despite broader set volatility.
Collector notes
Condition. Check for centering, edge whitening, corner dings, surface scratches, and print lines on the full-art holo surface. Alternate arts often show visible texture and glossy patterns, so any scuffs, roller marks, or indentation are important. Pay special attention to the dark background and the card edges, where whitening is easiest to spot.
Storage. Store in a penny sleeve and rigid top loader or card saver immediately after inspection. For long-term preservation, use a sealed graded-case style holder if graded, or an acid-free binder with side-loading sleeves if raw. Keep away from humidity, sunlight, and temperature swings; this card’s value is highly condition-sensitive.
Authenticity. Authentic copies should have crisp English text, proper set numbering 271/264, and the correct Secret Rare/alternate-art holo treatment. Counterfeits may have washed-out colors, poor texture, incorrect font weight, misaligned borders, or the wrong holo sheen. Compare the card’s texture pattern and print quality against verified scans, and for high-value examples consider professional grading or authentication. Because this is a widely counterfeited chase card, buyers should be cautious of unusually low prices and blurry photos.
